SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you ever need to find Sean Melia, you can probably catch him hitting the links.

Melia, who lives in Charlestown, is on a personal quest to play every single golf course in Massachusetts.

"I was a teacher until 2019," Melia told WBZ NewsRadio Wednesday. "I left teaching, I wanted to try writing, I wanted to try something different. Then [the coronavirus pandemic] hits in March and we’re kinda just at home."

Melia eventually got the idea to combine his two passions—writing and golfing—and play all the courses the commonwealth has to offer.

"I read some books about just other golf bucket list stuff, and that’s part of where the idea came from," Melia said. "I talked to my wife about it, but I didn’t really broadcast it. I was like, I’m just gonna start and see what happens."

After five years, Melia has checked off 145 courses from his list of 350. Melia said the journey might be more exciting than reaching the goal.

"It’s forced me into just these little neighborhoods and towns that I would have never gone to if not for trying to play some golf," said Melia.

When he is not teeing off, Melia reviews golf courses for his newsletter Bay State Golf and posts updates for his followers on Instagram.
