CHELMSFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Christopher’s Towing in Chelmsford is stepping up to keep drunk drivers off the roads this holiday season.

The company partnered with Chelmsford Police and the Chelmsford Police Athletic League to start the ‘Tow Drunk To Drive’ program, which has just kicked off its 10th year.

The program gives any tipsy people a chance to get a ride and have their car towed back home for free from any Chelmsford home or establishment 24/7, no questions asked.

Christopher Ferreira, owner of Christopher’s Towing, grew up in the family-owned towing business. He mentioned he’s seen his fair share of accidents and the effects they have on family and friends.

“If we take one person off the road that makes the conscious decision not to drive drunk, that’s one less chance of somebody getting into an accident, that’s one less chance of a victim getting hurt,” said Ferreira.

Ferreira adds that a big issue is that most people don’t want to go without a car because of obligations or plans the next day. This program gives those who drank too much the opportunity to erase those worries.

“We’ve already started the program this year, and we’ve received a few calls from people, they want to make the right decision. And for me, if one person takes this program, it’s a win,” said Ferreira.

Hoping to save lives, Ferreira also aims to boost the towing industry's reputation.

“Sometimes we get a bad rep, but hopefully this is something that helps our industry, you know, put it in a good light,” said Ferreira.

Chelmsford Police stated that for each car towed during the program, a $20 donation would be made to a local cause.

The program lasts until the new year, and a call to Christopher’s Towing or the Chelmsford Police Station can be made to get a tow. More information on the program can be found here.
