CHICOPEE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – The city of Chicopee has voted to ban gas stations from selling fuel to illegal dirt bike owners and ATV riders.

MassLive reports Chicopee City Council voted 12 to 1 in favor of the action during their last meeting of the year last week. This puts pressure directly on gas station owners, who much enforce the ordinance at the pump.

The first violation will result in a warning but subsequent violations will result in $100 fines. Gas station owners are asking why they have to be the ones to carry out the ordinance and say it would be better if the police apartment did.

Chicopee joins Springfield in adopting such an ordinance and Holyoke is also planning on taking up a similar action. Springfield leaders are also pushing for legislation that would allow the city to seize vehicles that are caught riding on public streets.
