Child In Critical Condition After Suspected Chemical Spill At Cape Cod YMCA

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — State Police said one child is in critical condition after a suspected chemical spill at the Cape Cod YMCA in West Barnstable on Friday.

She is expected to survive, and is stable as of Sunday.

The girl is one of two children from the YMCA's after school program that were med-flighted to Boston hospitals after the incident. Seven kids were taken to the hospital in total. Local first responders were first called to the scene at 2:30 PM on Friday, where the kids were coughing and vomiting.

State Police said the kids appear to have become sick just seconds after getting in the pool. Officials said firefighters on scene found a bottle of pool shock and an empty bottle of muriatic acid in a room off the pool deck.

The YMCA was told it could reopen its pool, but said it would keep it closed until further notice out of an abundance of caution.
