Chris Sale Won't Start For Red Sox Opening Day

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Red Sox ace Chris Sale will not pitch opening day, and is likely going to start the year on the team's injured list.

Ron Roenicke, the Sox' new interim manager, said Sale isn't injured, though—he's ramping back up after being sidelined by the flu and pneumonia at the start of Spring Training.

The lefty is about two weeks behind schedule, and with Opening Day set for March 26 in Toronto, he's just not going to be ready.

That means Eduardo Rodriguez will likely get the start, after last year's career-best 19 wins.

Sale hasn't pitched since August 13, when he was hurt, shut down for the year with elbow inflammation. Sale did not need off-season surgery.
