SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With Memorial Day Weekend upon us, the rising cost of gas is on people's minds.

According to Triple A, the average cost of a gallon of gas across the U.S. is $3.19 a gallon.

Here in Massachusetts, the average cost is at about $3.00 even a gallon.

Either way, the cost of gas, which had been holding steady, has been heading up for about a month in what experts say is an expected seasonal climb.

Warmer weather means more people taking to the roads, and an increase in demand.

But on Thursday there was a great deal on gas across the U.S. courtesy of Circle K Fuel Day

In Circle Ks across the country between 4 and 7 p.m. local time, customers enjoyed 40 cents off a gallon, a fraction of the normal cost.

Here in Massachusetts, Circle K is popular in places like Haverhill, Methuen, Bridgewater, and on the North Shore.

In Salem, this customer said she was thrilled with the savings. "Saving money on gas is like the best thing because I'm always getting gas, like every other day," she said.

Another customer agreed saying you take any savings you can get these days. "Saving a lot of money," he said. "Everything is expensive now, so this is a great deal."

This year Circle K said it donated 10% of its profits from Thursday's Fuel Day to the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, which provides college scholarships to military families who have lost a parent in the line of duty.
