BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Boston is hosting several events celebrating Juneteenth this week and weekend starting Tuesday.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates Black freedom. These events are put on by the city’s Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, partnering with several cultural leaders within the community.

“Boston is a city for everyone, and this Juneteenth, we honor the past while deepening our understanding of what justice requires today,” Chief of Equity and Inclusion Mariangely Solis Cervera said.

On Tuesday, Boston City Hall is hosted a flag-raising ceremony to honor the last enslaved African Americans being freed back on June 19, 1865 in history.

Following that on Wednesday, city leaders welcome Howard University’s Gospel Choir to Boston for a special concert at the Strad Theater in Dorchester. The performance reflects the joy, resistance, and liberation of the Black community. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. It’s free and reservations can be made here

Rounding off the weekend, a community festival with food, music, and games will take place at Franklin Park’s Shattuck Picnic Area Saturday. Residents from all neighborhoods in Greater Boston are invited to attend. The event begins at 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“I encourage every resident and family to attend an event this week to reflect, honor and be in community as we continue our work to make Boston a home for everyone,” Mayor Michelle Wu said.
