BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) The city of Boston has installed new smart parking meters in the South End to make the payment process more streamlined.

Instead of printing out a receipt, the pay-by-plate meters have the user punch in their license plate number and pay with a card or with quarters.

“It's pretty easy, I’ve seen it in other towns, but I haven't seen it in Boston before, so I’m excited about it, honestly,” said Rachael from Worcester.

For those who prefer to use the ParkBoston app, that’s still an option. The meter has to have the ParkBoston decal in order to use the app, according to the city.

“I personally use the app now and I think that’s just probably the fastest and most efficient way for me to do it as opposed to going up to it and punching my license plate number,” said Cameron, a South Boston resident.

While the app is a go-to for lots of drivers, Cameron said the new smart parking meters are a good other option for easy payment.

“If somebody’s a little less tech savvy and doesn't have a smart phone or Apple Pay for that matter, then I don’t think it's a bad idea,” Cameron said.

The smart meters are currently only on Tremont and Boylston streets, but the city says more will be installed later this year.
