BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Chris Carney and his family own the Brockton Fairgrounds, the longtime site of the historic Brockton Fair
But that all appears to be changing as Carney posted recently on social media that he and his family has entered into an agreement to sell the nearly 66-acre property to the city of Brockton.
In the posting, Carney said that the two sides have signed a memorandum of understanding that has not yet officially gone through.
The Brockton Fair dates back to 1874. But it wasn't held in 2019 and 2020 due to the pandemic. And it wasn't held in 2022 because part of the property was leased to other businesses as a means to generate revenue to help make up for the lost Covid years.
Carney said he believes selling the property to the city was the best option available. "After coming through Covid and everything like that, I thought it was the best possible scenario to have the city own the property that they can develop over time at their leisure," he said. Carney added he hopes the city does something "special" with the property. "To us, it's Main Street Brockton."
