MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Medford is asking for feedback from residents after facing backlash for changing the city’s trash pickup schedule from weekly to every other week starting in July 2027.
“It’s not a good idea,” one resident told WBZ NewsRadio. “I, myself, have four people living in a house and we fill up our trash bin every week.”
Some residents voiced concern over potential sanitation problems down the line.
“We have seen an increase in rodents, and I think keeping trash for two weeks is not a good idea,” Peter said.
Officials said trash collection takes up around $3.3 million in the city’s annual budget. Recycling is already being picked up on a biweekly schedule. The new decision comes as part of a new $200,000 grant program that the city secured to expand its composting efforts.
“I live in a two-family house… and we build up enough trash that I don’t see it working at all,” Jimmy said.
However, Charles said he welcomes the idea and said “I don’t really see what the big deal is.”
