Climate Change Forces Cottage To Be Moved In Cape Coastal Town

TRURO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A cottage on Ballston Beach in Truro has been relocated and moved because of concerns surrounding climate change. This move is a telling sign of how climate change is affecting coastal communities, and beach erosion is just one of the many climate related reasons that coastal homeowners are beginning to evaluate where they live. The cottage was placed on the back of a truck and moved about a mile inland to where it would be more protected from erosion.

This move is not uncommon for coastal areas like Truro, and as sea levels continue to rise, coastal storms will continue to occur at a higher rate. Recent climate data from a 2019 Boston Globe report shows that Cape Cod is one of the most vulnerable spots on the planet for climate change due to factors such as warming waters, changes in marine life, and beach erosion.

Ballston Beach has been hit particularly hard by these effects, with solid soil and sand slipping away from the shore and rising seawaters inundating the nearby shore and roads that surround the beach.
