GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The U.S. Coast Guard and local officials rescued several dozen people off of a fishing boat in Gloucester after the boat's engine caught fire on Wednesday.

The Coast Guard said it got the distress call from the fishing charter boat Yankee Patriot II at around 8:40 AM on Wednesday.

It launched three rescue boats and responded with the Gloucester Harbormaster. While they were responding, the crew of the Yankee Patriot II put on the boat's fire suppression system and sealed off the engine room, where the fire was.

The first responders were able to safely transfer all 40 passengers to their boats and the Yankee Patriot II was eventually towed back to the pier in Gloucester Harbor.
