Colleen Ritzer's Family Calls For Kindness 10 Years After Her Murder

DANVERS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — On the tenth anniversary of the rape and murder of Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer, her family is encouraging acts of kindness and positivity in the world.

"Ten years ago today, the world lost a caring, energetic and passionate young woman," Ritzer's family wrote on Facebook Sunday. "As we continue to mourn the loss of this extraordinary daughter, sister, friend, and teacher, we also look to honor who she was - a positive and kind individual. Today, we remember Colleen’s life and honor her legacy of kindness and passion for teaching by being the good in someone's day. Thank you for helping to carry on Colleen's legacy of kindness."

Ritzer was only 24 years old when she was killed by one of her students on Oct. 22, 2013.

Philip Chism was convicted of aggravated rape, robbery and murder, and was later sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole in 40 years.

Ritzer's memory is honored by The Colleen E. Ritzer Memorial Fund, which raises money for college scholarships for Andover and Danvers high school graduates who go on to major in education. There is also an annual Step Up for Colleen 5K Walk/Run held every May.

The Danvers School Committee is considering a proposal to rename the high school's library for Ritzer.
