MILFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Milford Police Department has added a furry friend to the force.

1-year-old black standard poodle “Piper” is the Milford Police Department's new comfort dog, tasked with helping those in the community who need assistance. Her partner and handler Sgt. Paul Pinto said her calm and loving demeanor helps people to calm down when they are dealing with stress, trauma, or grief.

“If someone’s not in a good place mentally, having someone like Piper, as sweet and loving and fluffy as she is, it redirects the brain. It basically takes you down a different path where you are better off than what you currently are,” said Pinto.

Pinto said he takes Piper to schools, senior centers and even on certain police calls, where she can help calm and soothe people. But, that does not stop her from being just like every other dog when she is off the clock.

“You take the vest off, she’s ready to run around and just be a dog and have fun,” said Pinto.
