BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A piece of concrete fell inside Boston's Prudential Tunnel Friday afternoon, causing major traffic delays.
Video from a MassDOT camera shows the debris falling onto the left and middle travel lanes of the westbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike.
MassDOT officials said no one was injured, though some cars suffered minor damage when they drove over the debris.
"This afternoon, a section of non-structural concrete at an expansion joint below Huntington Avenue became dislodged and fell into a travel lane in the Prudential Tunnel," MassDOT said in a statement. "Recent freeze/thaw cycles caused the concrete to become saturated, freeze, and then delaminate as temperatures rose today."
MassDOT said the two left lanes are currently closed while crews conduct emergency inspections across the area to find and remove any other loose material. More inspections will take place tonight and over the coming days.
Motorists should prepare for increased traffic in the area and seek alternate routes, MassDOT said.
