BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The State House was filled with different conservation groups on Tuesday as they voiced their opposition to a proposed expansion of the Laurence G. Hanscom Field Airport in Bedford.

The Massachusetts Port Authority supports the expansion plan that features 27 new hangars and renovating an existing Navy hangar.

The airport, which currently holds the most private jets in New England, became the topic of renovation after a decision in 2024 to improve the private jet industry in Boston.

In a letter to Governor Healey, air pollution and noise were among the concerns raised by some environmental groups including the Walden Woods Project.

“You just can’t hear when jets fly over, and this project would increase jet traffic by 6,000 per year,” said Executive Director Kathi Anderson. “So we are vehemently opposed to this private jet infrastructure expansion for that reason.”

The letter to the governor opposing the expansion was backed by groups and individuals including filmmaker Ken Burns and Boston-born musician James Taylor.
