SCITUATE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Prices are ever-changing when it comes to seafood, but .

As people start stocking their kitchen with food for a Labor Day barbeque, many are grabbing fresh, local fish and shellfish to cook up for their guests. Mullaney's Fish Market Owner Joby Norton said it's a daily process working with the fishermen to have a steady supply for customers.

"They land the fish tonight, we'll cut it up tomorrow morning, and it'll be in the display cases tomorrow, and it'll be out on the trucks going to the local deliveries for the restaurants," Joby Norton said.

Mullaney's has been selling fresh fish to consumers and restaurants for over 40 years on the South Shore. The majority of their seafood is caught in the waters off the coast of Massachusetts.

"[That's] your cod, haddock, sole, halibut, scallops, whiting, hake, monk. All the stuff that these guys catch in Scituate, we really specialize in," Norton stated.

While prices tend to average out throughout the season, there can be a big difference on the day-to-day depending on how much the fishermen catch.

"Every day there's an auction that basis the daily price of the species of fish," said Norton. "Sometimes it can fluctuate wildly. Some days cod fish may be costing me $10 and the next day it may be costing me $18."

If cost is a deciding factor, Norton says buying local fish and shellfish is typically your best bet. The quick turnaround also helps keep the quality top-notch. Market prices also fluctuate for seafood found in other parts of the world, but the Trump Administration's tariffs have caused even more unpredictability on the prices.

"We get a lot of tank-raised shrimp from India, which is a controlled environment which is nice because you can control the quality. However, with the tariffs [on India hitting] 50 percent, I think we're going to see a jump in those prices," Norton said.
