HAVERHILL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — One worker is dead and another suffered serious injuries in a construction accident in Haverhill Wednesday morning.

State Police said the accident happened shortly before 10 a.m. at a site on 495 at River Street. The department said two workers fell out of the bucket of a lift truck while working on a bridge over the Merrimack River, landing on a barge below.

One of the workers was confirmed dead at the scene, while the other was taken via ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, then via Med-Flight to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, with serious injuries.

The Essex District Attorney's office said around 1 p.m. that the second worker was undergoing surgery, and his condition was not yet known.

The worker who died has not yet been identified.

State Police and the Essex DA's office are investigating to determine what caused the men to fall out of the bucket, and OSHA representatives were also at the scene.
