BROOKLINE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two longstanding Boston-area cinemas are teaming up to keep the film rolling.
The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline and The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge recently announced that they are raising seed funds to ensure that 35mm film projection stays alive and well on their screens.
"35mm is the actual size of the film stock that the film was printed on and is projected from," Coolidge Corner Director of Special Programming Matt Anastasio told WBZ NewsRadio Wednesday.
With the switch to digital filmmaking in Hollywood over the past few decades, many independent movie theaters that show 35mm films were forced to install digital projectors to stay in business, though Coolidge Corner and The Brattle remain steadfast in their support for the classic format.
"I’ve never been able to articulate it properly, but there’s a life to 35mm that I’ve always felt is kind of lost in translation," Anastasio said. "It’s the most alive a film can feel."
Anyone looking to make a donation can do so for Coolidge Corner or The Brattle.
