Coronavirus: Boston Public Schools Closing Tuesday Until April 27

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Starting Tuesday, Boston Public Schools will be closed through April 27 due to coronavirus concerns, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced at a press conference Friday night.

"We've determined that now is the time to take bold action and slow the spread of this virus," Walsh said. "This is to protect our school communities, and all of our residents. That's why, starting Tuesday, March 17, we are closing all Boston Public Schools to all students."

Walsh said BPS intends to bring students back April 27, the week after April vacation week.

"However, if the situation in Boston with the coronavirus changes for the better—and we all pray that it does—we will bring our students back before April 27," Walsh said.

The schools will be open on Monday, March 16. Walsh said this is to allow parents some flexibility in planning, and to allow students to grab their belongings, and for "discussing learning materials that can be used at home."

"I will always measure every decision in child benefit," BPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said in a statement. "Today and always, their health and safety, as well as that of our staff, and families, is our top priority. In collaboration with Mayor Walsh and Health and Human Services Chief Martinez, BPS has been actively developing a plan to support our community during this rapidly changing situation. I am incredibly grateful to our teachers, school leaders, custodians, food service workers, bus drivers, and all the staff at BPS for their commitment to our children."

The mayor said the city has been planning for all types of scenarios regarding the virus outbreak, and says the decision is the most responsible to take at this time.

Walsh said 75 percent of Boston students are economically disadvantaged and rely on BPS for at least two meals each day, while 8 percent of students are homeless. Walsh said he is hastily finalizing plans to keep meal and other services available for these students.

Another press conference will be held Sunday, Walsh said, where he will outline the plan going forward.
