BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Northern lights are slated to make another appearance Saturday night in New England.

The Nastional Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminsitration (NOAA) issued a moderate Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Saturday, which means the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, will be visible in Earth's skies.

Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire are within the visibility 'viewline.' Northern Massachusetts might be able to see it with clear skies.

The peak time to watch out for the solar storm is Saturday night into early Sunday morning between 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The forecast for Saturday night is mostly clear skies in northern Mass.

Over the past few years, the aurora has appeared in Boston several times, with the October 2024 storm being the most vibrant one yet.

The agency uses the K-Index (KP Index) to measure how strong a geomagnetic storm is. A KP Index 6 or greater typically means the northern lights will appear over Boston. KP Index of 8 means the Northern lights will appear all over New England, which is what happened in 2024. Saturday’s KP Index is predicted to be at around 5.
