BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — MassWildlife offers some tips on how to protect pets from coyotes, as more and more Bostonians report sightings.

Since the early to mid-2000s, coyote sightings have been reported “in every city and town in mainland Mass.” MassWildlife’s Community Engagement Biologist Meghan Crawford said it is no surprise that Bostonians are hearing a lot more howling at night recently.

“It is not uncommon to have coyotes in these really developed spaces like Boston, [Worcester and Springfield],” said Crawford. “Right now is coyote mating season and this is a time when coyotes are more active. They can be more vocal.”

Since the eastern coyote arrived in the Commonwealth in the 1950s, they’ve become more comfortable coming into developed areas. Coyotes often hide out in the city's parks, as trash can provide them with a sustainable food source.

While the animals don’t always pose an immediate threat, Crawford said they start to get bolder as they spend more time around humans. She said the key is to keep them scared, especially when small pets are around.

“Step outside. Use that nice dominant body language. Wave your arms above your head. Shout at them. Walk in their direction,” said Crawford.

Preventative tips include removing bird feeders, securing garbage and feeding your pets indoors.
