CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Harvard Square was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic after multiple manhole fires Wednesday, authorities said.
The Cambridge Fire Department said fire and police crews responded to a manhole fire in the area of 27 Brattle St. around 8:30 a.m. Shortly after arrival, a second manhole popped and began spewing fire.
Officials said high levels of carbon monoxide were detected in nearby buildings, which were evacuated.
Eversource workers also responded to the area and worked with fire and police to make sure the area was safe. According to Eversource, there are no related power outages for their customers.
The MBTA temporarily closed the Brattle Street entrance to Harvard Station as a result of the ongoing activity.
At 12:22 p.m., Cambridge Police posted on X that the scene was consolidated and JFK Street was reopened to traffic, while any traffic through the Brattle Street area would continue to be diverted.
A few hours later, Cambridge fire chief Thomas Cahill said a third manhole was burning and that crews were actively looking to secure the power.
Police said no injuries have been reported.
