BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — CrossFit Southie collaborated with the Salvation Army on Saturday to raise money for those in need during the holiday season.
The fundraiser focused on CrossFit-run special workout competitions. Around 150 athletes participated, competing in teams of two to do lunges, wall balls, pull ups, weightlifting challenges, and more.
Chris Gosler, owner of CrossFit Southie, said he was ecstatic to be working with the Salvation Army on a fundraiser like this.
“We like to host big events, and we like to also give back to the community,” Gosler said. “We’re here to support each other and also support the Salvation Army and for those in need.”
Meredith Johnson, director of gift planning at Salvation Army, said she's excited to be teaming up with CrossFit Southie and grateful for all the work they put into the competitions.
“It’s something that they do anyway, but then they just added the Salvation Army into it and started raising money hand over fist online,” Johnson said. “It’s been pretty incredible actually, to have this engagement in the neighborhood.”
So far, the organizations have raised $3,850 and Johnson discussed how they plan to spend those funds.
“We had our biggest distribution in Dorchester at the Kroc community center where we distributed over 15,000 gifts and meal cards to more than 2,200 families,” Johnson said.
