CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was all integers, shapes, and puzzles at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge— and no, it wasn't the students crunching the numbers.

MathTalk, a team that makes learning math fun through games, stories, and art, held its first annual Family Day on MIT's campus, with admission completely free of charge. WBZ's Suzanne Sausville was there to see families enjoying a cookout, arts and crafts, and of course, math games.

"Math is really important and highly predictive in later social, academic life outcomes and we're already seeing disparities in math as early as preschool. It's one thing to say you're not good at math— no one says they're not good at reading. What we're trying to do is at least break that math anxiety and show that math is everywhere, math can be fun, and it is for everybody," said Claudia Ferrara of MathTalk.

Among the attractions at Family Day, MathTalk had art installations, number lines, venn diagrams to show off to the kids and adults.

According to MathTalk's website, the name behind the community organization comes from the math conversation, which "improves cognitive development and boosts math confidence."
