SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cyclists who use Bluebikes, a popular bike share system in the greater Boston area, reflected on the effects of winter weather on their ability to bike.
Bluebikes is a public bike share program with over 4,000 bikes at 400 stations around Metro Boston. Cyclists unlock a bike from a station after paying a membership fee and return the bike to any station after their trip.
Winter weather can complicate the Bluebikes system. Snow, sleet, rain and other storm conditions sometimes shut down Bluebikes, preventing cyclists from using the bike share system.
During last week’s snow and rain storms, the bikes remained available, explained cyclists.
“For instance, the snow we just had, the bikes were plenty available. And same with the rain for the past couple of days,” said one Bluebike user.
“The Bluebikes serve me all the time, in the rain, the storms, the winter,” said another cyclist who uses Bluebikes.
However, there have been times when the Bluebikes system was locked down due to storms.
“Over the past five years, I think there’s maybe two or three times when I haven’t been able to get the bikes. But I think in those instances the roads aren’t really passable anyway,” said Dan, a regular Bluebike user.
More winter weather is predicted to hit the Boston area in the upcoming days and weeks. If a shutdown is announced, Bluebikes said cyclists should return all bikes to a station as soon as possible.
