BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Daily COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts surged above 1,000 for the first time since May on Thursday.

Cases hit 1,046 in Thursday afternoon's daily report from the state, with 2 new, confirmed deaths. A look at the raw data confirmed that those are the highest daily case numbers since May 1, when the state recorded 1,115. The last time the state broke 1,000 cases was on May 6.

Hospitalizations climbed to 264, the highest number since May 25, with 55 in the ICU.

The case count came as towns and cities across the Commonwealth are putting mask advisories in place to combat the rise of the Delta variant of the virus. Nantucket is the most recent, putting in place a mask advisory for all residents, both indoors and outdoors, on Thursday.
