DANVERS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Norfolk Superior Court judge sanctioned a Danvers attorney for using artificial intelligence to write legal briefs in a wrongful death lawsuit.

The four briefs, submitted by attorney Steven Marullo, contained references to cases that do not exist.

Marullo said he was not aware that three of his interns, two of who were recent law school graduates, used an AI chatbot to write the briefs.

He also claimed not to know AI could generate false information.

The judge fined Marullo 2,000 dollars Feb. 12.

Marullo represents the family of Sandra Birchmore.

Birchmore's family alleges the 23-year-old woman was pushed to suicide after a decade of grooming and assaults from three former Stoughton police officers.
