DANVERS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A young Great Horned Owl is safely back in the wild after a brush fire in Danvers last week. The Danvers Fire Department said the brush fire began last Tuesday behind Danvers High School.

When they returned on Wednesday to make sure the fire was completely out, they happened upon the owl lying motionless on the ground.

Firefighters put the bird in a box and gave it some water before handing off to local animal control. Danvers Animal Control examined the owl and said it had breathed in a lot of smoke, but was generally okay.

The bird was released in the wild in the same area near Danvers High.

Though somewhat uncommon for casual observers to see, Great Horned Owls are fairly widespread in Massachusetts except on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. A small colony has managed to reestablish itself there despite being absent for decades if not centuries, according to the Martha's Vineyard Times.
