BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — In a labor ruling this week of potentially historic proportions, Dartmouth College men’s basketball players have the right to unionize after being considered employees.

The National Labor Relations Board Northeast region said Monday that the ruling was made because “Dartmouth has the right to control the work performed by the men’s varsity basketball team, and because the players perform that work in exchange for compensation.”

The school issued a statement soon after the ruling was announced that said, "We believe firmly that unionization is not appropriate in this instance and we will be seeking a review of the decision..."

Back in September, all 15 members of the men's basketball team signed a petition looking to join the Local 560 Service Employees International.

If this ruling moves forward, it could set off a tidal wave of similar rulings in college sports across the country.

The next steps are while Dartmouth files an appeal, the team has the opportunity to hold union elections.
