BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — David Ortiz was back at Fenway Park Wednesday—this time, to help the Red Sox make a major investment in Boston's young artists.
Big Papi presented a $500,000 donation to the Boston Arts Academy, the city's only public high school for visual and performing arts, on behalf of the Red Sox Foundation.
"Man, this is a lot of loot right here," Ortiz said, presenting the huge check.
BAA students treated the guests to Latin music as the BAA Foundation kicked off its "Build Our Future" campaign. It reminded Ortiz of "Salsa Sundays," a tradition in his home growing up that his family maintains to this day.
He said music is a big part of who he is.
"When it comes down to playing sports, there's one art that it gets combined with, it's the music," he said. "I remember I used to play songs that give me the good bumps, and all of a sudden, I was out there doing my thing in the best way."
Ortiz talked about the importance of the donation.
"This is something big, this is something that a lot of people probably don't see right now, but in the future, you definitely see the result," he said. "Helping the youth to be creative, to develop what they can be good at, is something special."
