BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Preliminary election day is set for Tuesday in Boston.

The primary election on Sept. 9 will set the stage for the general election on Nov. 4. Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, who is also on the ballot, said it's critical for residents to participate in their local elections.

"It is important for people to go out and vote and for us to tune in and read about the candidates who are running at large, read about your district council candidates, read about the mayoral candidates, and decide what kind of city you want," Louijeune stated.

Incumbent Mayor Michelle Wu has three challengers on the ballot: Robert Cappucci, Domingos DaRosa, and Josh Kraft. The top two vote getters will advance to the November election.

There are ten contenders for counselor at large. Incumbents Louijeune, Julia Mejia, Erin Murphy, and Henry Santana will be opposed by Frank Baker, Yves Mary Jean, Marvin Dee Mathelier, Rachel Nicole Miselman, Will Onuoha, and Alexandra Valdez. The preliminary will eliminate two challengers, leaving eight to run in November for the four available seats.

There will also be preliminary elections for District 1, District 2, District 4, District 5, and District 7. Councilors in all other districts are not included in the preliminary election because they are running unopposed.
