DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dedham Public Schools has canceled Friday's varsity football game as police actively investigate an anonymous shooting threat.
In a letter to the community, school officials said Dedham High School received an anonymous call from a blocked phone number Friday morning.
According to the district, the caller reported a rumor that a student was going to "'shoot up the football game today.'"
"Dedham Police were contacted immediately and are assisting the School Department in a full investigation into this matter," officials said. "While we have no reason to believe there is an immediate threat, the district is proceeding with extreme caution."
The game against Dover-Sherborn was initially scheduled to proceed at 6:30 p.m. with an increased police presence, restricted entry, and a ban on bags and containers.
In a Facebook update just after 4:30, Dedham Public Schools said the game was called off.
