DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Wednesday provided a different commute for some elementary school students in Dedham, Mass.

International Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day took place on Wednesday, so the Avery Elementary School decided to participate. Students, teachers and parent volunteers met at the old Avery Elementary School and walked with the students to school.

“[It’s] exciting and fun to walk with our friends,” said one of the children.

Ann Stephens was one of the parent volunteers walking alongside the children wearing safety vests.

“We just sort of make a walking parade. We call it a walking school bus, so we’ve got a meeting point and then we’ll head to school together,” said Stephens.

Fifth-grade teacher Michele Delehanty said walking to school sets a great foundation for a day of learning.

“[It’s] a healthy way to start your day and get your brain activated and ready to learn,” said Delehanty.
