WEST ROXBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — While the overall risk of transmission is low, state health officials have sent out a warning after West Nile Virus was found in mosquitoes in four Boston neighborhoods: Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Roxbury, and West Roxbury.

The Boston Public Health Commission said the virus is carried by mosquitoes and can be spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

These are the first samples to test positive for the virus in Boston this summer.

As of July 24th, state health officials say there have been no confirmed human or animal cases of WNV or EEE in Massachusetts.

BPHC still encourages residents to protect themselves. "Bug spray and maybe putting on a longer sleeve shirt at night," answered one Jamaica Plain resident when asked what he thought about the WNV warning and if he was going to be taking any precautions.

He also said he would be looking for any standing water in his yard and getting rid of it.
