WRENTHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The author of the hit children’s book series, “Diary of the Wimpy Kid,” celebrated the kick off of his new book and international tour in Wrentham Sunday.

Jeff Kinney published the 20th installment of the series, titled “Party Pooper,” and told WBZ NewsRadio that bringing Greg Heffley’s world to life has gave him an adventure of a lifetime.

“There’s something very universal about childhood,” he said. “We all, across cultures, share a similar childhood with parents and bullies and teachers and pets. I think that those things [are what] we all have in common, and that’s what’s appealing about this series.”

He added that he thinks why the series resonated with so many kids is because the “characters are like blank slates in a way.”

“I think it’s the kids [that] could project themselves onto the characters,” he continued.

The Diary of The Wimpy Kid series has sold over 300 million copies to date. It was first published back in 2007, with the stories resonating with kids across generations and all over the world.

Kinney said he always imagined the series’ success but in a surreal, idyllic sense.

“Like every kid who’s ever picked up a soccer ball has imagined playing in the World Cup, and in that way,” he explained. “I was like ‘maybe one day,’ but I didn’t have a realistic hope of it.”

The Party Pooper tour sets off on the east coast before crossing the pond to the United Kingdom next.
