Dorchester Baby Found In Trashcan Released From Hospital, Mother Charged

BOSTON (WBZ News Radio) – The mother of a baby found in a Dorchester garbage can has been charged with attempted murder and reckless endangerment of a child, according to WBZ-TV. Prosecutors say the mother, Marie Mercier, arrived at a home to cook or clean while pregnant, give birth to the baby in the bathroom, and put it in a trash can on Dorchester Avenue. The defense says mental health issues are at play.

The baby was discovered in a garbage can on Friday on Dorchester Avenue, and rushed to a hospital, but was released and in good health today.

Police say Mercier told them she thought the baby was dead.

A bystander, Silvana Sanchez, discovered the baby.

“I was walking along Dorchester Ave when I heard crying and grabbed an EMT,” she said. Sanchez was relieved to hear that the baby was alright.

Mercier was later found in Milton. The baby is in the custody of the state.
