DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Large bins filled with fresh organic fruits and vegetables packed up tables inside the Codman Square Health Center on Saturday for the opening day of the Dorchester Winter Farmers Market.

“Neighborhoods like ours in Dorchester, we don’t have access to fresh local organic produce,” Cynthia Johnson, president of Codman Square Neighborhood Council, told WBZ NewsRadio. “It’s a struggle to, one, have access to it and, two, to be able to afford it.”

The market is the only farmer’s market in Dorchester and sells everything from fresh produce and baked goods to clothing and local artisan crafts. Johnson said customers can use multiple ways to pay.

“We accept SNAP, we accept HIP, we accept those who support subsidies,” Johnson said. “We also have our own coupon program.”

That’s thanks for the generous donation from City Kids, who donated more than five thousand dollars to the coupon program.

The market also allows small businesses in the surrounding communities to grow their customer base during the winter season.

Michelle Carter sells homemade jams at the market from her shop, Michelle Green Thumbz.

“Herbs and spices and everything nice that is normally out in the suburbs, we’re bringing it here to the local urban setting,” Carter said.

The Dorchester Winter Farmers Market is open every Saturday until March 15.
