BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Dorchester woman was hospitalized with serious injuries after she was struck by lightning in Boston Saturday.

According to Massachusetts State Police, a 31-year-old woman was walking her dog on the boardwalk of Savin Hill Beach around 3:30 p.m. when she stopped to speak with a 49-year-old woman. While they were speaking, a lightning bolt struck the area where they were standing, sending both women into the air.

The 31-year-old woman was thrown onto the beach and was unresponsive, police said. Witnesses called 911 while Tracy Cronin, an ICU nurse at Boston Children's Hospital, and her boyfriend, an ER nurse, performed CPR.

Boston EMS and State Troopers arrived on-scene and transported the woman to Boston Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

Officials said the 49-year-old woman was thrown in a different direction by the force of the blast, but is not believed to have been struck by the lightning bolt. She told first responders she would make her own arrangements for medical evaluation.

State police said the 31-year-old woman's dog, Bruce, was scared by the blast and ran off. He was later found and returned home.
