BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The lease for the Fields Corner Post Office on Adams Street in Dorchester will end on Oct. 26, and if not renewed, the building will temporarily close.
Although the United States Postal Service said they are looking for a new Post Office location, Boston City Councilor John Fitzgerald wants the location to stay within the neighborhood.
“You got to think of the people that use it. Some people say, ‘There’s email around, who really uses the post office anymore?’” Fitzgerald said. “There are people that get prescriptions through the mail, there’s still deliveries that happen through the mail.”
He said he’ll be filing a resolution calling for a new Post Office to be created in Dorchester.
Come Oct. 26, P.O. boxes will be moved to the Fields Corner Annex on Clayton Street, but only mail pick-up will be offered at the location.
Folks looking to buy stamps or ship a package will have to travel to the other Dorchester Post Office on Codman Square.
Allston’s Post Office faced a similar incident in 2019, but the temporary closure it faced soon turned permanent. Fitzgerald said he doesn’t want that to happen and called for support from residents.
“What we’re really hoping to do is mobilize, be vocal. Write to your congressman, write to the United States Postal Service, write to the Federal Government,” said Fitzgerald. “If you have first-floor commercial, wouldn’t you want a long-term, government-based tenant that brings in the rent for you? That is a stable tenant to have.”
