AMHERST, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — UMass Amherst officials say dozens of people had to be rushed to local hospitals after annual festivities this Saturday.

Officials said they saw a large number of alcohol intoxication cases from parties off-campus. Amherst Fire said 28 ambulances had to be called to the area, but all of the people involved were expected to be okay.

Amherst Police arrested two people for underage possession of alcohol.

The "Blarney Blowout" happens every year at UMass Amherst before St. Patrick's Day. The celebrations can sometimes get out of hand — the most notable example is 2014, when the partying made national news after police used teargas on students and arrested at least 70 people.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman told the Boston Globe this year's Blowout seems to have drawn thousands of students from all around the region.

Fire and campus officials said this year's festivities featured "Black out rage gallons," also known as "borgs." Borgs are a new TikTok innovation on where one mixes alcohol, water and electrolytes in a gallon jug. Many recipes call for a full fifth of vodka.
