MAYNARD, Mass. (WBZ News Radio) – The Town of Maynard will be changing their name, well for one day that is. The town will temporarily change their name to “Mayenard” on Super Bowl Sunday in honor of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

“We have a quarterback name Drake Maye and we are in a town named Maynard I think it only makes sense to vote in a positive manor,” Maynard Select Board Chair David Gavin said.

The Select Board unanimously voted to adopt the temporary name at Tuesday night’s meeting on the condition it wouldn't cost the town any money. That is when a local business stepped in to make it more official. KVC Builders in Maynard made a sign to mark the occasion with the new spelling “Mayenard”.

The goal was just a moment of levity, something fun for folks to joke about. If nothing else, it got people to attend the Select Board meeting. One member said it was the largest crowd they had ever seen.

“I think its time to just have a little fun in Maynard, and take a little time away from the things that we do have to consider deeply and seriously for the next few days and watch the football game Sunday night!,” Select Board member Chris DiSilva.

Many members of the community have capitalized on this fun time in town by producing merchandise. Various fundraisers in town are selling, and have sold out, of t-shirts and other "Mayenard" apparel. Profits from selling the gear will go towards cancer research and a local scholarship.

Once the Super Bowl is over, win or lose, the town will go back to the name its held for over 100 years.
