BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — One college student's trash could be a dumpster diver’s treasure.
As college students wrap up their exams across the Commonwealth, they also have to pack up their stuff and head back home. Whether it’s a lack of space in the suitcase or some packing procrastination, a lot of reusable items end up in the dumpster. That has turned into big business for one man combing through the dumpsters at Boston College.
“For 15 years, I’ve looked from May 1 all the way to May 20,” said the man.
With dumpsters always filled to the brim on Boston College’s campus this time of year, he makes out like a bandit. He said it only takes him about an hour each day to fill up his van.
“You have no idea, my friend. I find everything you can find in that dumpster there. Everything. Money, computers, TVs, everything,” said the man. “I’ve been doing it for 15 years. It will take me one hour to fill this van up.”
Boston College recommends students donate reusable items through its BC Clean initiative, which donates them to non-profits for those in need. The dumpster diver still found plenty of keepers on Wednesday morning.
“I got about five fans, I got one of the new frying things they have now, I have this trash thing here, which is $20,” said the man.
Once the move-out period ends, he will circle back around in a couple of months when the students move back in.
