BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Globe reports that Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is contemplating his future after a setback in recovery from a knee surgery he underwent last summer.

The paper quotes a "major league source" saying Pedroia had a "significant setback with his left knee."

Pedroia has had several surgeries since 2016, and has acknowledged in the past that his career might be finished; however, as recently as November, the Sox' Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom told The Globe Pedroia was "feeling good and intending on playing."

He has only played nine games with the team since Manny Machado slid into his knee in April 2017.

He has two years and $25 million left on his contract with the Red Sox, which will still count against the team's payroll under the MLB's luxury tax rules.
