BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Since early July, dozens of mosquito samples from across the state have returned positive test results for West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
According to real-time results from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, there has been only one reported human infection of EEE this season, and no reported animal infections of either virus.
However, several mosquito samples from Middlesex, Franklin, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Plymouth Counties have shown WNV and EEE present in local mosquito populations.
As of August 5th, Middlesex County had reported 13 samples with WNV and one sample with EEE. Franklin County had reported two samples with EEE; one in Orange and one in Wendell. Suffolk County has reported five samples with WNV, all of which were detected in Boston.
Plymouth County has had the most positive EEE samples in the Commonwealth to date, with at least 36 infected mosquitos detected between July 1 and August 5. Most of the county's infected samples came from Plympton and Carver.
Over the past few weeks, Norfolk County has reported two WNV infections; one in Needham and one in Brookline, and a EEE-infected mosquito in Canton. Bristol County reported its first positive case of WNV in Attleboro last week.
