EVERETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A local man is charged with trying to steal thousands of dollars worth of casino chips.

State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit (GEU) said they have arrested 35-year-old Gary Hunt after he allegedly tried to steal 13 orange $1,000 chips from the Encore Boston Harbor Casino. Hunt is being charged with larceny over $1,200 and larceny from a building.

On Tuesday night around 6:00 p.m., State Police GEU said they observed the suspect repeatedly getting up from a table game that he was not playing to use his phone. The last time Hunt returned to the table, he reportedly told those around him that another person at the casino had won a lot of money.

Police alleged Hunt used that as a distraction for the patrons and staff, as he reached over the table to grab $13,000 worth of chips from the dealer’s tray. Hunt then allegedly ran out of the casino using an emergency exit, before authorities found him in a nearby parking lot.

Hunt was transported to the State Police Medford Barracks for booking.
