FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Environmental officials in Foxborough, Mass. have urged the town to take ownership of a contaminated piece of land and start the cleanup.

The late owner of the Summit Casting Foundry willed the property to the town. The town did not want the land, but they might own it anyway.

“We know it was given to the town, it was never taken or it was never received by us,” said Board of Health Director Matthew Brennan. “There’s some ambiguity of ownership of it.”

The town never filed the legal paperwork to deny the bequest, so environmental officials want the town to take ownership and get rid of the contaminants.

“My goal is just to be able to clean it up. One of the ways I’m thinking about doing it is asking [Environmental Protection Agency] and trying to do a Brownfield Grant.”

The contaminants known to be on the land are mostly fuel oils and hydraulic oils.
