EVERETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio)— Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria held his re-election campaign kick-off party Thursday.
Mayor DeMaria announced to his supporters that he will run for another term. Mayor DeMaria has served as Everett’s mayor for 17 year, since 2008.
This comes amid calls for his resignation after an audit found DeMaria overpaid himself nearly $180,000 in “bonus pay” between 2016 and 2021.
In February, Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro conducted an audit that revealed DeMaria’s overpayment and additionally found that he concealed them from the city budget.
City councilors are demanding DeMaria repay that exact amount back to the city, but DeMaria has denied all wrongdoing.
Earlier this month, the council unanimously passed a “no confidence” vote in DeMaria. Meanwhile, the Everett City Council will conduct a vote on term limits for elected officials.
