EVERETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police in Everett shot a man armed with a sword early Monday morning, after they said the man barricaded himself in his apartment.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said the incident started just after midnight on Monday, when police learned that a man who lived at a Buckman Street apartment building had barricaded himself inside.

SWAT teams and reinforcements were called in to handle the situation. Police said the man opened the door to his apartment holding what they described as a sword, and started moving toward the officers. They shot the man with a non-lethal "sponge" round, but the round didn't stop him, so an Everett Police officer shot the man with live ammunition. Still shots from WBZ-TV show a double-edged sword lying on the pavement near an evidence-marker.

The man was later identified as a 45-year-old, but his name has not been released yet.

First aid was given on scene, and the man was later taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. An officer was also transported to the hospital to be checked out.
