WALTHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Most customers that lost electricity in Waltham during a major power surge have regained power. About a hundred customers were without power on Sunday morning, down from more than 3,000.

An Eversource spokesman said their crews were still working at 30 locations around the city on Sunday where meters and wires were damaged. The company said it has hired outside electricians, who are helping get the issues fixed.

City officials said Saturday afternoon Eversource had been hit with a power surge at their Pine Street substation, which caused traffic lights to stop working. Police said the surge also caused several transformer fires and smoke in local buildings.

Some residents in a Waltham Facebook group said their electric appliances wouldn't turn on once they got power back, and a handful lost their internet access.

Eversource says it is still investigating the cause of the original surge.
